My August Wish List: What I Pinned This Month

Patterned midi dress in rust, teal and cream tones

Last Sunday I was clearing out the closet before the seasonal switch, and I kept running into the same problem. My phone had a hidden pinboard full of things I wanted in August, and half of them I never checked on. So this month I finally did the math: pin everything, then share only what survived. This is that list.

Two things shaped what I kept. First, color. I am drawn to anything with a real palette this month, the brighter the better. Second, drape. If it moves when I move, it earns a pin. I’ll go through the pieces one by one, and I’ll tell you the honest cost-per-wear case for the splurge items.

The pieces I’m actually keeping

The Dries van Noten midi dress. This month’s list leans hard on Dries, and honestly, I don’t have a defense for it. The prints and the use of color in this house are just on another level, and everything from the fall line has looked great. I love the pattern on this dress and the way the shape sits at the waist. It’s the piece I’d reach for on a dinner date, and the one I’d buy first if the rest never happened.

A rainbow beaded piece. Bright, happy, and a little loud. I’ve been wearing neutral tones so long that my wrists and neckline feel flat, and this is the antidote. It’s the kind of thing that makes a plain shirt look put-together without you trying. One bright accessory is all it takes to make a capsule outfit feel like it has a personality.

Colorful beaded bracelet with gold accents and red toggle

A paper-thin cashmere long sleeve. This is the quiet winner of the list. The brand is doing everything right right now, and the fabric on this long sleeve is the point. It layers over a camisole in the morning and under a coat at night. I’m the type of person who will own one great neutral long sleeve and wear it into the ground. This is that piece.

A silk camisole. This feels like a wardrobe staple the moment you look at it. A straight-cut, thin-strap silk cami is the one item that works with everything in a small closet: under a blazer, under a cardigan, over a skirt, as a dress layer. I keep a few in my rotation already, and a new color is never wasted. It’s the kind of quiet buy that pays you back on every single wear.

Cluster earrings. Fun and a little chic. I have a rule for accessories: if it doesn’t make a plain outfit look intentional, it doesn’t make the list. These do that. They’re the kind of detail that says you thought about what you’re wearing without it costing you an hour in front of the mirror.

Style Math: the splurge, broken down

The Dries van Noten dress is the one splurge on this list, and it’s the one I can actually justify. Here’s how I think about it: a quality dress is not a cost, it’s an investment in how many times you’ll actually reach for it.

Let’s say the dress is a $500 splurge. Wear it 50 times, and that’s $10 per wear. Compare that to the cheap dress you impulse-bought and never put on once. That one has no math to defend it. That’s the test I run on everything here: price divided by the number of times you’ll genuinely put it on.

How I build a wish list that doesn’t waste your money

Three rules I follow every month:

Pin it for a week before you buy it. If you’re still thinking about it after seven days, it’s a keep. If you forgot it exists, it was a scroll, not a want.

One splurge per list, maximum. This month it’s the dress. If I wanted to add a second, I’d have to drop something else. That’s the whole point of the constraint.

Buy the neutral, skip the trend. The cami and the long sleeve are the pieces I’ll still be wearing in two years. The beaded piece is the one that’s purely for the season. I’m fine with that, as long as I know which is which.

FAQ

Do you actually buy everything on this list? No. Maybe half. The pinboard is a filter, not a shopping cart. If I pin something and never open the page again, it’s gone by the time the next list drops.

Is the Dries van Noten dress worth the splurge for someone who isn’t a fashion person? If you only want to buy one thing from this list, this is the one. It’s the most versatile, the most wearable, and the one that’ll outlast the trend cycle. Skip the rest if you’re on a budget.

When is the best time to buy these pieces? Right now, for the fall pieces, and during end-of-season sales for the cashmere and the silk. The beaded piece is the one I’d wait on. It’s the most seasonal, and it’s the least likely to be a long-term keep.

a note from Maya: I used to buy the trend first and ask questions later. This list is me trying to do it the other way around. One splurge, a few staples, and a lot of color. That’s the whole system.
